METEOR MASH
10 mins
for mixed chamber ensemble
fl., b. clar., vln, vcl, vib. perc.
written for Ensemble Offspring as part of the 2023 Hatched Academy
Meteor Mash takes its name from a Pokémon move: a high-powered Steel-type punch that strikes like a meteor! This punchy piece explores the sound of metal among lush chords, criss-cross gestures, sci-fi sounds and meteoric sizzles and slides.
FINAL GIRL CIRCUIT
6 mins
for piano trio + MIDI keyboard
commissioned by the Muses Trio for their 10th Anniversary celebrations
Final Girl Circuit is a tribute to horror movies and their most iconic sound effects. The term ‘Final Girl Circuit’ was coined by James A. Janisse of the Dead Meat YouTube channel/Podcast, and is used to denote what is often the penultimate scene in horror films where the last girl alive (the final girl) is chased through increasingly terrifying gauntlets to escape and/or defeat the villain.
Instead of a traditional piano part, I’ve incorporated the samples into a MIDI keyboard to be played similarly to a piano – this instrument has a number of iconic and memorable horror movie sound effects mapped onto its keys. The pianist plays them to create repeated grooves, similar to a drum pattern, which accompanies the violin and cello. These grooves evolve, gaining more speed and momentum, until the final girls themselves join in at the very end.
